Project Overview
Shepton Vets is a proposed new veterinary surgery for both small and large animals. The surgery will be located between the Bath & West Showground and Shepton Mallet and will provide much needed animal care for the local population and farmers.
The project presented numerous challenges, including steep topography, existing mature trees and no nearby public sewers for connection. For surface water, Morgan Civil and Structural worked through the SuDS hierarchy for discharge and arranged infiltration testing for the client. As expected, infiltration was viable and Morgan Civil and Structural developed a soakaway-led scheme which combined permeable asphalt and a crated soakaway to serve the development up to the 1 in 100 Year + 45% Climate Change Event.
Whilst infiltration was viable for surface water, it was not possible to utilise for foul flows due to site area constraints and topography. Morgan Civil and Structural worked with a third-party sewerage treatment plant provider and were able to confirm a suitable specification treatment plant for domestic waste from the surgery, which would be discharged into the nearby watercourse subject to EA approval. Morgan Civil and Structural advised the client of the package treatment works being for domestic waste only ,and that medical and animal waste would require storage and a regular collection service each.
The project was designed with sustainability in mind, working with the site topography and providing a SuDS led drainage strategy. The application received planning permission with drainage in full compliance with local Somerset County Council policy.
